The story of how Big Ramy started bodybuilding is incredible. Born to a family of fishermen, naturally, Ramy too was trained as a fisherman. In search of better opportunities, he relocated to Kuwait and worked in the surrounding sea. One day, while going back home from work, Ramy saw the Oxygen Gym in Kuwait. In an instinctive move, which has now proven to be perhaps the best decision of his life, Ramy decided to join the gym. Exhausted and dirty from his day of work at the sea, he would go home, take a shower, and eat some food before dashing to the gym. Immediately, he fell in love with bodybuilding. It was apparent that his effort and dedication at the gym was paying off. Under the guidance of a German bodybuilder, Dennis James who worked out at the same gym and the owner of Oxygen Gym, Bader Bodai, Ramy began to take up bodybuilding more seriously. His dream was to win the renowned Mr. Olympia competition.

Bodybuilding Career

Within just of a year since he started to work out, Ramy weighed 200 lbs. As he began to take up bodybuilding with even greater interest and passion, his friends and family pushed him to compete as a bodybuilder. His first competition was the Oxygen Competition in 2011. His excellent performance at this competition lit a fire in his heart and motivated him to participate in several more bodybuilding competitions.

On the 30th of November, 2012, just over two and a half years after first stepping into a gym, Ramy astounded everyone by winning the prestigious Amateur Olympia bodybuilding competition. He weighed 286 lbs at the contest and was undoubtedly the biggest and the leanest of all the competitors. As a result, he earned his IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness) Pro card. An IFBB professional card is only given to those who win a national championship. A Pro card allows one to compete in bodybuilding competitions with prize money. Thus, Ramy’s dream of becoming a professional bodybuilder had been fulfilled.  It was unprecedented for a man to win such a competition with as little training under their belt as Ramy had.

The following year, in his first professional event, at the 2013 New York Pro Championship, Ramy secured first place. With this win, he was eligible to participate at the pinnacle of bodybuilding the Mr. Olympia competition.

During Mr Olympia in 2013, Ramy finished just 8th. Although it was an outstanding result, considering he had just turned professional a year back, it was a harsh reminder of where he stood with the best in the world. The entire bodybuilding community lauded his tenacity and willpower.

The next year, he won the New York Pro championships again. At the 2014 Mr. Olympia he came 7th. While this was an improvement, a top 5 finish still eluded him.

The next couple of years saw him finish 5th and 4th respectively.

A top 3 finish at the Mr. Olympia would go a long way in improving his confidence and marketability. His dream of winning the Mr. Olympia is yet to be achieved.
